I’m usually behind the camera, but here’s my doing one of my favorite things: eating. In this case, it’s a breakfast taco in Austin, TX.
Hi!
I’m Jeff, and I’m a writer and researcher who’s really interested in processes—the whats, hows, and whys behind the things we do—especially the processes behind writing and communicating .
In pursuit of these interests, I earned a PhD in Rhetoric & Composition (aka Writing Studies) and have been conducting user-focused research into contemporary communication practices and teaching in higher ed.
I’ve primarily been using my writing to help design more equitable and accessible teaching materials, to help people learn how to research and write in ways to better meet user needs, and to help create better writing courses. (You can learn more about this on the “My Work” page.)
Although I’ve honed my skills in academia, I’m ready to do more innovative and impactful writing in new contexts.

Here’s a photo of me with my favorite camera. I developed and scanned it myself at home.
I spend a lot of my free time, and extra money, on cameras, film, and photo supplies. I develop and scan everything at my house and even have a little darkroom set up.
I wouldn’t say I’m good at taking photos, but I love learning about each little step in the process and what small differences—in light, in chemical dilutions, in seconds—can make in your photos, and I like to make postcard prints to send out to my friends and family.
Bread—and bread products, like pizza—is my favorite food. During grad school, as I was looking for ways to decompress and stop thinking about my research for a bit, I started getting into baking bread and making my own pizza dough. It’s a long process, and I love tweaking little things—like the amount of water, or type of flower, or the proof time—and seeing how it reacts with everything else to come out slightly different every time.
Since then, I've gone deep into the sourdough rabbit hole and have purchased a little Ooni Oven so that I can pretend I’m a pro. Unlike photography, though, I would toot my own horn and say my bread and pizza are actually really good!

Here are a couple of loaves of bread I baked cooling on the table. And my cat enjoying the residual heat. (I took and developed this photo too.)
